The Queen's Green Canopy
We were honoured this year to work alongside The Queen's Green Canopy to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 by encouraging people to plant and protect trees as a legacy to Her Majesty's Service to the Nation.
We developed and delivered four flagship interfaith projects across Great Britain and hosted special tree planting days in London, Bradford, Cardiff and Edinburgh. The projects were a powerful demonstration of different faith communities coming together to deliver positive social action and showcase the powerful impact of urban community tree planting.
Our largest Queen's Green Canopy event marked the start of National Tree Week where 10,000 trees were planted at Newhall Park, Bradford. Despite what turned out to be a snowy and windy day, over 100 dedicated volunteers and local community groups braved the elements and helped to plant urban trees!
Over the course of six months, we engaged over 1,500 volunteers to plant 44,000 trees for the Jubilee through community events attended by Lord and Deputy Lieutenants representing The Queen. Our partnership will continue into the next planting season to now allow members of the public to plant trees in memory of Her Majesty The Queen.
I spent the first 11 years of my life in West Yorkshire and I think travelling around with my dad on his vet's rounds visiting farms was when I first experienced the power and the pull of beautiful scenery. Trees are so important to that, and so important to our urban life too. But above all we perhaps know more than ever now that they are vital to our future survival, and that of other species.
